With four days of competition starting on Tuesday 21st January, the Welsh Alpine Ski Championships, will cater for some of the Best British and International alpine athletes to those just starting out on their alpine careers. ... With over 100 athletes racing each day and athletes from USA, Russia, Sweden, Spain, Switzerland, France, Ireland and the UK, friendships with be forged and results made.
Chief of Championships, Robin Kellen explains what the week is all about competition wise: There are four days of competitions in the Welsh Alpine Championships. The first two days are FIS International races (Giant Slalom & Slalom), this is followed by two days of British Races, mostly focussed at Children (Under 16s). The FIS races provide fantastic entry level international competition and really help young athletes start to measure themselves against athletes from other nations. They are a stepping stone to regional and national team selection and help identify the talent on the future. The British races (non FIS) are a great opportunity for many of our young skiers to get a first taste of ski racing as well as preparing the best athletes for events such as the British Championships held at the end of the season.
The races are being held in Champéry for the eighth successive year. The ease of access is very important for many of the parents driving out to watch their children race as well as the central location for the racers already in Europe racing.
With great pistes and fantastic training facilities, one of the main reasons for returning is the invaluable support offered by the Val d'Illiez Ski Club, Hotel Suisse and the Canton du Valais. A partnership of a few individuals helped bring the event to Champery in the first instance. Ray Pritchard (a Welsh businessman now living in Switzerland) and ex World Cup Skier & resident of Champery Christophe Berra have been integral in bringing and keeping the events in Champery.
With the likes of current Delancey British Alpine Overall Champion Darcie Mead intending to race, the excitement and competitiveness of the races will appeal to those taking part as well as those watching.
