Marcel Hirscher produced a classic second run charge to win the 6th Men's World Cup Slalom in Adelboden. After having made a mistake on the first run that saw him languishing in an uncharacteristic 8th place after the first run, Hirscher gave it his all and managed to overhaul the rest of the field on the second run. Manfred Moelgg had lead after the first run but had to be content with third place at the end of the race. Mario Matt made it an Austrian one two with second place overall. Ivica Kostelic took fourth and Felix Neureuther took fifth place.
The perfect conditions for the race saw a large crowd make it up to Adelboden with just under 40,000 people attending the two days of racing.
David Ryding admitted after the first run that he had not quite let the skis run across the top section and had left himself with too much to do lower down. This was his first visit to Adelboden and it is one of those slopes that you need to learn about with its numerous rolls and pitches. Having struggled in Zagreb with flu, Ryding is feeling back to form at the moment but will not take on the Wengen Slalom next week. With all roads leading to Schladming now, Ryding is looking at the long road and will race in the Europa Cup next Sunday in Kirchberg, Austria instead. "I still need to get lower FIS points so that I can start earlier," Ryding explained in the finish in Adelboden. "The skiing is there I just need to have the confidence to let the skis go in the early parts of the turn," he continued.
British ski racing fans will have noted that another Brit was also racing today yet under the Swiss Team colours. Daniel Yule, who raced at the GB Children's Championships a few years ago, made his second World Cup start. Sadly his enthusiasm got the better of him and after a mistake on the top flats he crashed out lower down.
