Dolomiti Valtellina 2028: Bormio and Valdidentro among next Winter Youth Olympic Games’ venues

Less than two years after the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, the Olympic spotlights will return toValtellinafor the2028 Winter Youth Olympic Games(YOG), which have been awarded to Italy today, Thursday January 30th, 2025, during the143rd International Olympic Committee sessioninLausanne.TheDolomiti Valtellina 2028will take placeineleven venuesamongValtellina, TrentinoandCortina d'Ampezzo, fromJanuary 15 to 29,2028.

TheDolomiti Valtellina 2028 projectwas developed by theItalian Olympic Committee(CONI) and supported by thenational governmentand the regional governments ofLombardiaandVeneto, along with theAutonomous Province of Trento.

Like at Milano Cortina 2026,Bormiowill have a big role in the Youth Olympics: after hosting men's Alpine Skiing and the debut of Ski Mountaineering at the 2026 Winter Games, theStelvio slopewill also be the home of theAlpine Skiing eventsfor the 2028 Youth Olympics.

THE DOLOMITI VALTELLINA 2028 PROJECT

One of the key strengths of Italy’s successful bid was the ability to leverageexisting venues from the 2026 Olympic Games, immediately capitalizing on thelegacythat was central to theMilano Cortina project.

Dolomiti Valtellina 2028 will utilize many of the same venues as the 2026 Winter Games. Specifically, in Valtellina, Bormio and Livigno will once again take center stage, withValdidentro—one of the municipalities in the Bormio area—joining the lineup.

Since its inception in 2007, theYouth Olympic Gameshave aimed to provideyoung athleteswith aspringboard to elite competition, inspire new generations toembrace sports, and foster aspirit of global solidarity.

The Dolomiti Valtellina 2028 Winter Youth Olympic Games will welcome1,900 athletesfrom around the world, competing acrosseleven disciplines.

Bormiowill host Alpine Skiing on the iconicStelvio slope, as well asFigure SkatingandShort Trackat thePalaghiaccio. TheSki Stadium Azzurri d'ItaliainValdidentrowill stage theBiathlonevents.

Bormio, a premier winter sports destination, will also host one of the Olympic villages. Additionally, alongside the city ofTrento, it will be the site of theDolomiti Valtellina 2028 Festival, an event that will preview theOlympic Torch celebrationsin 2027 and mark the lead-up to the Games with a blend ofsports,art, andlocal culture.
