The International Ski Federation (FIS) has conducted its annual inspection on the Stelvio slope, set to host the AUDI FIS Alpine Ski World Cup events in Bormio on December 28 and 29. The focus was on safety enhancements in key sections of the Stelvio while exploring new ways to elevate the spectator experience
While Bormio's ski scene thrives year-round, with the Stelvio glacier hosting training runs for champions like Sofia Goggia, winter sports enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting December 28 and 29, 2024. On these dates, the world's fastest skiers will once again converge in Alta Valtellina for the AUDI FIS Alpine Ski World Cup.
The journey towards what has become one of the great speed classics officially began on September 4 and 5, with the arrival of the International Ski Federation (FIS) delegation to conduct the annual inspection and meet with local organizers. The inspection took place just under four months before the Downhill and Super-G World Cup races on the legendary Stelvio piste.
The on-site inspection was led by FIS Men's World Cup Chief Race Director Markus Waldner. He was joined by Hannes Trinkl, Race Director for World Cup speed events and two-time champion on the Stelvio slope (1993 and 2000), Janez Hladnik, the technical disciplines counterpart, and Raimund Planckner, Assistant Race Director for speed events. The delegation also evaluated preparations for Milano-Cortina 2026, where Bormio will host all men's Alpine skiing disciplines and the Olympic debut of ski mountaineering.
