Federica won her ninth World Cup Giant Slalom with a commanding win in Mont Tremblant. Leading after the first run she held on to beat Petra Vlhova into second and Mikaela Shiffrin took third. Sara Hector and Lara Gut-Behrami took fourth and fifth.
The race was blighted by bad weather on the first run that saw the top six gates shrouded in think fog. Once the racers were through this, they had to contend with rollers as the course worked its way down into the finish.
The weather did clear towards the end of the first run and this allowed a number of racers to make it into the top thirty for the second run. Five from outside the top 40 starters with French racer Clara Direz eventually making the most of things to finish in tenth.
With the course having been set by the French team, it was a slight surprise for only one o their girls to make it through to the second run. Other big names to go out were Michelle Gisin and Lara Colturi.
Come the second run and the Slovenian set course gave the first two racers down the slope a nasty surprise as they came over the first roller with Elisa Platino and Elisa Moerzinger both crashing out just out of sight of the start.
Conditions did get slightly better towards the end of the race with Katharina Truppe, Stephanie Brunner and Thea Louise Stjeurnesund all making good moves up the leaderboard.
Mikaela Shiffrin, fifth after the first run put in a good run to open up a sizeable lead but should could not cope with the charge that Petra Vlhova put in to take the lead, Vlhova put in the fastest second run.
Neither Lara Gut-Behrami nor Sara Hector were able to live with the pace of Vlhova and Shiffrin so its was left to Brignone to battle Vlhova for the race win.
With the snow softening, brignone admitted that she wanted to show her best skiing and held on for the race wins, making her the oldest female to win a World Cup Giant Slalom.
We do it all again in the morning, weather permitting!
