Getting to the top in Alpine ski racing, or in any top line sport, is no simple matter. We hear talk of performance “pathways” but perhaps the idea of some direct route is slightly misleading. As Britain’s most successful Alpine ski racers will testify, while the fusing of talent with hard work is key, and you have to be resilient and tenacious, in the long run everyone has their own journey with its individual zig-zags and pitfalls. And no one can walk that road on their own. Our top racers have all benefitted in some way from well-wishers; frequently a network of contacts made by coaches, but also British companies and ex British racers helping with advice and assistance to clear the way. With that principle of successful networking and teamwork mirrored in the world of business, the lesson learned is that relationships matter.
