Jack Gower posted a fast first run time to give the rest of the field something to chase in the opening Giant Slalom race of the southern hemisphere season in Cardona, New Zealand, and held on to win the race. Gower lead the first run by three quarters of a second from young Slovakian Matej Prielozny and New Zealand's Adam Barwood. The two would swop places after the second run as Barwood posted the fastest second run time.
