Gut wins in Val d'Isere by the smallest of margins over Vonn

If Lindsey Vonn thought that she was going to have it all her own way in Val d'Isere, then she had not told Lara Gut. Vonn had hoped to build up a significant lead from the Downhill section of the race to help her in the slalom. Vonn recognised the threat that slalom specialists like Michaela Kirchgasser held over her and had looked for a lead approaching two and a half seconds. With only Gut able to get within half a second of her from the Downhill, Vonn felt the door was ajar in terms of a challenge coming in the slalom section. Kirchgasser took third after a blistering slalom run that saw her rise from 20th after the speed section into third place.
