Yarnold wins in Königssee

Britain's Lizzy Yarnold produced a dominant performance at the fourth World Cup race of the season today, to take gold in Königssee, Germany. ...

Yarnold became the first slider to win two world cup races this season as she completed her two runs in an overall time of 1:44.24, which put her a comfortable 0.71 seconds ahead of silver medallist, Anja Huber Selbach of Germany. Russia's Maria Orlova took the bronze.

Today's gold followed on from last week's silver in Altenberg and her pre-Christmas gold in Lake Placid.

The 26 year-old looked back on top form on a track she felt she felt she had yet to master.  There were no signs either of the dizziness which caused her withdrawal from the final 2014 world cup in Calgary.  The Kent slider has now moved up to 5th overall in the rankings for this season.

Following the race, a thrilled Yarnold said: “It is such a tough track here in Königssee - it has taken me six years but I've finally got it! A big thank you to my coach Eric [Bernotas] as well, as I couldn't have done this without him”.

Laura Deas, from Wrexham, once again produced two red-hot starts - just 0.02 off the track record for her second run - and narrowly missed a top ten finish again with a cumulative time across the two runs of 1:43.58 to take 11th place.

Rose McGrandle ran into difficulties on her first run, following an excellent start, as she exited the Kreisel Corner at speed and briefly lost some control on her sled through the following chicane. Having lost that time in the opening run, the Milton Keynes slider produced a superb second run performance of 52.51 to climb five places, finishing in 14th.

The men's skeleton runs in Konigsee are tomorrow at 10:50 GMT and 12:30 GMT.  British Skeleton also has sliders in action on the ICC circuit today. See our website for a full round-up later:  www.britishskeleton.co.uk
