Glenshee Winter Games, which were held on 8 & 9th February proved to be a successful weekend for Gordon Skiers. Gordon Skiers are a thriving race club with ... Â good numbers racing and a lot of committed athletes in the developmental stages. On Saturday Glenshee hosted a Bairns race for children up to U12 and also BASS race for U14 upwards. Unfortunately due to worsening weather conditions a decision to abandon the BASS race was taken. The Bairns racers and the race team battled on through strong winds and snow to complete the GS race for Saturday.
Gordon Skiers came away with; 2nd U10 Female, 1st & 3rd U10 Male and 3rd U12 Female. The weather cleared slightly over Saturday night and provided some good race conditions for the Sunday morning when the Bairns raced over 2 runs on a Kombi style course and the U14 upwards get their first run of the weekend underway on the BASS Slalom. Bairns finished their two runs just after lunch and a few minor course changes were made before the U14's came across to have their timed run. During this period the weather closed in and provided some rather unpleasant conditions in the start gates- strong winds, no visibility and hailstones. These conditions proved very challenging for all competitors but they all dug deep and raced through some of the toughest conditions many have experienced.
In the U14 upwards races Gordon Skiers athletes took 1st & 3rd U14 Male Slalom, 1st & 3rd Female Slalom, 3rd Female U16 Slalom, 3rd U18 + Male Slalom, 1st & 3rd U14 Male Kombi. In the Bairns Kombi we had great results as well with some very convincing wins and came away with 1st place in the U10 Female, U10 Male & U12 Female. All Gordon Skiers racers did themselves and the club proud whilst showcasing their potentials. The racers were backed up by a strong team of 6 coaches and supportive parents. All those involved left Glenshee on Sunday with their heads held high and smiles around despite the challenging conditions faced.
The Scottish Race season started off very unsettled due to weather conditions but hopefully the forthcoming races will go ahead as scheduled and Gordon Skiers can increase their medal haul for the season. James Paxton, Gordon Skiers Race Convenor.
