Word must have got out after the success of the two Night Slaloms last year as a whole heap of people rocked up to take part in the Scottish FIS night Slaloms being held in Chamonix. With the races taking place on ... the same hill that had been used for the two Europa Cup Night Slaloms, fortunately the weather God also helped. The girls race took place first in bright sunlight for the first run and then with the light going, the spot lights gave the girls the directions.
Cara Brown took the British spoils after Natalia Harte had put herself in an excellent position after the first run and then went for the win on the second run before crashing out. Harte knows that she has to attack on each and every run if she is to work her way up the rankings and sometimes you win big and other times you struggle and crash out. This was one of those days for her. For Brown, the knowledge of having been the best of the Brits in the race was scant consolation on a night that many struggled with. Brown finished 14th overall with Kate Angus the next best British racer in 22nd just ahead of Emma Peters in 24th. For Peters this was her first FIS result. Jazmine Butcher placed 25th and Olivia Parker 27th. The race was won by Switzerland's Elena Soffel (just 17 years old).
In the Men's race Tim Kelley took the win with Billy Major taking 30th spot as best of the British racers. Robert Poth battled his way down to 32nd from a start of 98 (and took 89 FIS points to further enhance his already impressive reputation). Oliver Smith was 36th, George Davis 37th and Fraser Buchan 40th.
All impressive results but early season FIS races may soon be a thing of the past if no support from parents in the resort is not forthcoming the organisers warned. It takes a lot of on the hill support for these races to happen and with many of the foreign coaches pulling up their sleeves and helping keep the race track in great condition, if more parents of racers would help out, race organisers would be extremely grateful.
