Robert Poth gave the older racers plenty to think about as he came from second after the first run to win the second race of the season and take control of the British Indoor Grand Prix Series. Ashley Breese held the lead after the first run yet was unable to keep hold of it as Poth put the pressure on to Breese on the second run. Callum Henderson, who has for so many years dominated the series, is now realising that he has to up his game if he is to keep the current crop of rising stars behind him. For the second race in a row, Henderson had to be content with third place overall.
The British Indoor Grand Prix Series has built up a great reputation as being innovative and bringing fun for the racers. The new innovation for the second of the two races this weekend was creating a mound of snow that the course setter, Richard Breese, took the racers over. While some did not cope well with the increased speed coming into section, this gave the racers more to think about rather that the mundane traditional slope that is the norm on indoor races. The idea was well received by the vast majority of racers and gave them plenty to think about during course inspection.
Ashley Breese took a lead of a tenth of a second over the rest of the field after the first run with Poth and Henderson taking second and third respectively. George Davis was almost a second back in fourth with Daniel Poth in fifth just two hundredths behind him. Kieran Norris was a full second back on the lead back in sixth place.
With the top fifteen going in reverse order for the second run, Robert Poth raised his game to be the only racer to go under fourteen seconds on the second run to overhaul Breese and take the win. Daniel Poth put the pressure on George Davis to take fourth place overall and Kieran Norris put in a much better second run to push Davis further down the finish order overall.
In the age groups, the Under 14 age group was won by Scott Wylie with Thomas Greenway and Bailey Dickson joining him on the podium. Matthew Davis won the under 16 age group just ahead of Nathan Breese and Thomas Rofe finishing just outside the the top ten overall in taking third in the age group.
Robert Poth, Ashley Breese and Daniel Poth took places one, two and four overall in the race and the top three places in the Under 18 age group while Kieran Norris took the under 21 age group win ahead of George Davis and Ross Taylor.
With just one racer in the Senior age group, Callum Henderson had an easy run to the age group win. One of the most competitive age groups is the Masters and Andrew Hjort made it two wins out of two while John Norris swapped places with Denzil Davis from the first race.
With all three weekends taking place at Castleford this year, the British Indoor Grand Prix Series is proving to be the most innovative series once again. The late start on the Saturday to allow racers and parents to drive up on the morning was a winner and the sculpting of the course to bring in the bump, gave the racers more to think about. As one of the leading racers over the course of the weekend tweeted after the race: "The British Indoor Series is the best series in the summer." Maybe a few other racers could come in July and experience the smiles and excitement of the series. This is where they need to be tested out.
