It may have been a small field but you still have to beat those that are in the race. Darcie Mead, a seventeen year old from London who trains with the Evolution group, has only ever competed in nine downhills yet she is now the proud owner of the Delancey British Downhill Title. With many of the top British female racers deciding that as they had not trained speed this season, they would be better off staying away from the speed programme in Meribel. Numbers are down but then with the change in age groups for this season, this is one reason.
Mead skied well in the first race, the National Championship run to beat Natalia Harte with Violet Miller taking third place both in the International race and the British Championship race. While speed might not be on the agenda of some, the experience gained by the racers in this race will be valuable for the future. The records will show who won and not who was not here.
Natalia Harte, who nearly spectacularly crashed in the training run yesterday, held her nerve and attacked on her run but was unable to better the time set by Mead.
