The National Junior Slalom was the first of the scheduled FIS races for the English Alpine Championships being held for the fifth year in Bormio. With some quality slalom skiers in the field including the rising Australian slalom skier, Ross Peraudo (17 FIS points) and in the girls field there were some quality Italian and Finnish racers. A few years ago, the Swedish World Cup ladies Slalom team stopped off at these racers, including a certain Frida Hansdotter who has just won the bronze medal at the World Championship slalom. These races are a breeding ground for some top racers!
While Nick Moynihan took the outstanding result of the day in taking third place overall and the best English male result, Matt Thompson put in some good runs to take second amongst the English racers. While his result will not help his FIS points, sometimes the placing is just as important to demonstrate to others. Thompson would have liked to have been further up the results list, Thompson is a talented racer and if the finances were in place across the British programme, he would benefit from increased competition from other British racers. While Moynihan has broken through the psychological numbers barriers in the hunt for points, Thompson is getting there. Ashley Breese was the next best of the British racers. Breese too will not benefit from the points scored in this race as he already has better results but he was not far off others on a much fuller programme. Breese is another racer to have taken but needs to make that step up and start lowering the points. It is a hard world out there but Breese and Thompson both have the ability but need to push a little harder to lower those points. Peter Glasgow was the next best British racer and scored his first result of the season in slalom. Oliver Krahelski was the fifth best British racer and managed to also make a season's best.
In the girls race was the best of the British racers in sixth spot overall, Alice MacAulay took tenth overall for the second English place and Beth Widdup was third out of the English racers. Widdup has spent most of the winter studying and this was her career best result in Slalom.
The racers head into the Giant Slalom in the morning with the under 12 and under 10 racers taking the slopes on the top half of the hill.
