Thick fog and soft snow from just below half way down the Stelvio piste made it an easy decision for the organisers to make in cancelling the opening race of the 2025 English Alpine Championships in Bormio.
Fog from the start down to the San Pietro jump would have been possible to race on but it was rapid softening of the snow from just after the flat section under the jump that meant safety of the racers had to be taken into consideration.
The decision was made just prior to eight with the hope of stopping racers from activating their lift passes (thus keeping them valid for the next day) but it was also announced that the top half of the course would be left open for people to train on if they wished.
With weather conditions not looking great for speed racing tomorrow, the programme of FIS races has now been changed so that the next two days will see the NJR Giant Slalom take place further up the mountain (on the Stella Alpina) with the FIS Giant Slalom taking place on the same hill.
The Men's and Women's Super G will now take place on Saturday, weather permitting, down the Stelvio piste.
Sunday will see the FIS Slalom down the Stelvio before the NJR Slalom taking place on the Stella Alpina.
