Austrian Stefan Eichberger injured his knee during today's first downhill training run on the Saslong course in Val Gardena. The 25-year-old from Styria felt pain in his right knee after a jump over the camel humps.
Following an initial examination on site by team doctor Dr. Anton Wicker Jr., the speed specialist was taken to Innsbruck for further evaluation. An MRI scan there revealed a torn anterior cruciate ligament and a torn meniscus in his right knee.
Eichberger will be transferred to Graz today for surgery. He will be out for the remainder of the season.
Eichberger has started the season really positively with a sixth and a seventh in the Super G and Downhill in Beaver Creak after failing to finish in the Copper Mountain Super G. He is the current Austrian Downhill champion from last season.
