Sungbin Yun of Korea has won the overall 2017/2018 BMW IBSF World Cup in the men’s skeleton. Three weeks before the start of the Winter Olympic Games on his home track in PyeongChang (KOR), the Korean became his country’s first athlete to ever win the overall title in the skeleton World Cup, few would now bet against him winning gold in his home Olympic Games.
Despite opting to miss the World Cup finale in Königssee (GER), Yun managed to score a total of 1,545 points from five wins and two silver medals, giving him enough to win the overall standings. He finished 38 points ahead of Axel Jungk (GER, 1,507 points), who celebrated his first ever race win at the final World Cup race of the season. Tomass Dukurs (LAT, 1,464), who finished third at the finale in Königssee, ended the World Cup season in third place overall.
The defending title holder and the overall winner for the last eight seasons, Latvia’s Martins Dukurs, finished in fourth in the overall standings for the 2017/2018 BMW IBSF World Cup. Shortly before the final World Cup race, the Latvian was retroactively disqualified from the previous race in St. Moritz because his runners were too hard. Despite finishing second in the final race, Martins Dukurs was unable to defend his title.
Dominik Parsons of Great Britain finished in 11th spot ahead of teammates Marcus Wyatt and Jerry Rice who were 12th and 14th respectively. Great Britain are due to announce who will be selected for the 2018 Olympic Games next week where they have qualified two slots.
