It was not a perfect run Chemmy Alcott admitted but having not raced since the Crans Montana World Cup weekend at the beginning of March, this was Alcott giving her British racing public a last glimpse of herself racing Super G as she won her seventh career British Super G Title. ... Meribel is a World Cup slope and Alcott is at home on the World Cup. This may not have been a World Cup field, just 13 girls took to the start, but the slope gave all the racers plenty to think about and only six made the finish. Cara Brown took second with Honor Clissold taking third.
Ten days ago the likelihood of races happening in Meribel were slim and after the French Championships a week ago were hit by a snowstorm, the conditions on the Stade were good: Hard snow yet the light was flat and this may have hindered a number of the racers.
Alcott was the class act on the start list and she did not disappoint. Although not fully fit, Alcott made sure that she used her fit left leg to power through the turns and gain maximum benefit from it while ensuring her right leg kept her in the course. After the race Alcott explained “I just wanted to come through the finish line with a smile on my face. The last few weeks have been tough with my leg, I am not in my best shape of the year, but I would have been disappointed if I didn't win. It was really, really great to win and on what was a tough course.”
Cara Brown took second place and was delighted to be close to Alcott even though she had slid on her inside ski half way down the course. Brown has been training in Meribel this winter and used her early start number, 1, to maximum effect despite the slip. To add to her delight she also scored her best result of the season to date in Super G.
Honor Clissold walked off with third place in the race and the Junior prizes as well.
