Svindal wraps up Super G with win number 4

He said it was not over after the Downhill but the manner in which Svindal owned the Super G race down the Olympiabakken course, was one of a World Cup Champion. Aksel Lund Svindal is the first winner of a World Cup Globe this year and has now closed in to within 29 points of Marcel Hirscher in the Overall World Cup point's standings. Georg Streitberger took second place ahead of Werner Heel.

This was the fourth win on the World Cup for Aksel Lund Svindal out of five races. In the second race of the season he was second, his worst result on the Super G World Cup this season he commented. This win, his 21st World Cup career win and first on home snow, makes Svindal the most successful Norwegian on the World Cup. This was also the 50th time he had been on the World Cup podium.

“I was definitely more focused on the win today that's the thing I am mostly happy about,” Svindal said after his victory. “It's fun to win races and I knew that Marsaglia (second in the Super G standings) had to pretty much win today to have a chance at the Finals so I was rather relaxed about it. It felt like I had the title already coming into the race, Super G has been my best event and out of the eight titles I have four Super G ones.” Svindal has also equaled the record for most number of wins in Super G in a season, held three times by Hermann Maier, with this his fourth win and with one race remaining.

For Georg Streitberger this was his best result of the season in Super G. “In any case I am happy. Better to be five tenths than five hundredths, that does not hurt so much,” he explained. Up until the World Championships, Streitberger's best result had been tenth. “It's perfect for me today, I had an almost perfect run and I feel my shape has been getting better and better in the past weeks, now I just wish the season was a bit longer,” Streitberger added.

Werner Heel took third and with his eye on taking a podium place in the Super G season long standings, he says he will not make it easy in Lenzerheide for Matteo Marsaglio or Matthias Mayer in the final race. Matthias Mayer took eighth place to stay in third place in the season long standings for the Super G World Cup.
