Weather brings bitter sweet results in Lenzerheide

When the decision was made to cancel the last downhill of the season, there was only one real winner. Aksel Lund Svindal may have won the the Downhill Globe but his assault on the Overal Globe was given a severe dent. Svindal is the man chasing the points in the speed events and Marcel Hirscher is racking the points up in the tech races. The lack of a score for Svindal places the ball firmly Back in the Austrians court. Svindal, who has never won the Downhill title before, had mixed emotions on the day: On the one hand he was delighted to win the Globe and on the other realised that he had probably lost out on the Overall Globe.

Talking just after the Men's race had been cancelled, Aksel Lund Svindal admitted that he had “mixed emotions. While it is nice to win the Downhill Globe, I also need the points in the race for the Overall,” he explained. “I have never won the Downhill Title before so this is nice,” he added. Ted Ligety, due to have raced the Downhill to pick up points for the Overall said, “this was the thickest fog I have ever seen.” Many of the other racers agreed that this was the right decision.

Svindal admitted that the Downhill Globe was one of his targets for the season. Having already won the Super G title, he will be hoping that the weather changes for the Super G so he can pull points back in the race for the Overall.

While Svindal was celebrating his first Downhill Title, for Lindsey Vonn this was her sixth straight Downhill title and her seventeenth Crystal Globe in her career. This globe makes her the most successful female athlete of all time in terms of Globes won. Not having raced since injuring herself in the Super G at the World Championships in February, this is a supreme achievement. Vonn's single point victory over Tina Maze was based around her three wins in Lake Louise (two) and Cortina d'Ampezzo and came despite missing the last two races in Meribel and Garmisch.

The combined points of the Men and Women in the Downhill World Cup, made Head the most successful brand from the Downhill races.
