For 20 years Sean Langmuir and the Alpine Training Centre team have been providing Coaching and Instructor Training to the Military.
Each year ATC provides Royal Engineers Winter Sports (REWS) with high quality coaching in Stubai in preparation for the Divisional, Army and Inter-Services Championships. In addition to this ATC provides a full-time programme for the ATC/REWS elite FIS racers.
Under ATC’s Guidance the Royal Engineers have been overall Army Champions twice in recent years and are looking for a third overall title in Serre Chevalier at the end of January 2019. In 2018 the Royal Engineers won the clean sweep of Overall Male Champion (Duncan Kuwall), Overall Female Champion (Sheona Macmillan) and Overall Corps Champions. This sort of success happens as a result of years of hard work on and off the hill by the Royal Engineers’ team under the passionate and expert tutelage of the ATC coaching team. ATC have provided REWS with a comprehensive recipe for success within their training programme including excellent technical training, gate training, video analysis, ski specific fitness training, ski preparation and a great deal of technical and moral support.
The ATC/REWS FIS programme is allowing two talented young racers, Euan Kick and Duncan Kuwall to continue their ski racing careers with the end goal of competing at the very top level. This is funded by the The Royal Engineers, sponsors Optima Group and equipment suppliers Head. Whilst embarking on a bright future with a long-term career in the military Euan believes that the programme and his time in the army is helping him to become a more rounded athlete. “This recent season with support from The Army, Royal Engineers Winter Sports and Optima Group was a massive stepping stone in broadening my skiing ability and becoming a better well-rounded athlete across all four disciplines and the results have spoken for themselves. I had three podiums out of four races at the British Alpine Championship in Tignes, France, giving me third overall at the championship.”
Brigadier Kev Copsey OBE, President of Royal Engineers Winter Sports said “The Royal Engineers Winter Sports (REWS) group enjoy a strong and personal relationship with the Alpine Training Centre (ATC). Over many seasons, REWS and ATC have forged a friendship based upon the shared passion for Alpine sports and the development of Royal Engineer soldiers to either compete at a high standard or lead other soldiers in arduous mountain activity. Through mutual respect and a well-placed sense of commitment, Sean Langmuir and his talented team have directly developed the skiing ability of hundreds of sapper soldiers.
Importantly, ATC has also been the pivotal lead in developing our two elite athletes, Sapper Euan Kick and Sapper Duncan Kuwall. Both these young soldiers have the potential to compete at Olympic level, which will be realised through the vital relationship between REWS and ATC. Additionally, ATC also assist in the development of Royal Engineer Ski Instructors. Providing excellent one-on-one coaching and training, the Royal Engineer Ski Instructors are considered to be the very best across the British Army. ATC and REWS are a forceful combination of talent, commitment, passion and the selfless pursuit to developing and training Royal Engineer Soldiers to become better athletes, soldiers and leaders. ATC should be justifiably proud of their intimate involvement in this key military activity.”
In addition to their work with REWS, ATC also provides top class pre-season training and race support at the inter services championships to The British Army Ski Team. This has resulted in the army winning these championships for the past two seasons.
