Race for 2022 Olympic Bids hots up

2014 sees the Winter Olympics head to Sochi in Russia, 2018 will see the athletes head to Korea for the greatest winter sports events. Now the race is on to see where the event will take place in 2022. The latest candidate to throw their hat into the ring is the Kazakstan resort of Almaty. Almaty is expected to face strong competition from the likes of Barcelona, Lviv, Oslo, Munich and Kraków in the bid race. Both Munich and Barcelona have already hosted summer Olympic Games yet hope to use the nearby mountains to host the alpine events.

How serious is this bib? Almaty was a contender to host the 2014 Winter Games but failed to make the short list of finalists as the Games eventually went to the Russian city of Sochi. The former Kazakhstan capital also indicated an interest in bidding for the 2018 Olympics, which  went to Pyeongchang in South Korea.

Barcelona's bid is also intriguing as Madrid is bidding to host the 2020 Summer Olympic Games. Both cities claim that the Barcelona bid will not undermine the Madrid bid as Barcelona has already committed its support and is a co-host city with it hosting football matches.

Cities interested in bidding for 2022 have to let the IOC know by November 14 with a decision due to be announced at the IOC Session in Kuala Lumpur on July 31, 2015.
