Telling edges out Walters while Evans dominates women's race

The entry was full and the sun shone - what more could you ask for! The new management at the Welwyn Garden City slope have been much more appreciative of the world of ski racing and as such homeless Wycombe Phoenix have been able to run their first Club National at the slope. The very proactive committee that are helping Wycombe to regain their soul are to be congratulated with bringing so many racers from across the country to the race. Not the longest slope yet this meant that no mistakes could be tolerated if you expected to win! Marc Telling admitted that having the fast and experienced Pete Walters going just before him had been a help as he was able to raise his game to go faster each time! Walters had to be content with a short lived lead after each of the runs! Both posted exactly the same time on the final run but Telling had just to much in reserve! This time time there was no error approaching the finish on the final run by Telling! Stuart Riches was best of the rest as he took third ahead of Benn Hall and David Blackwell.

Charlotte Evans's domination of the women's race showed that she may not have been having the best season all round but she still has the talent and guts to put down fast times when it counts. The damage for the rest of the field was done on the first run and from then on the only one to stay in touch was Kathryn Barber but she could only claw back a hundredth on the last run! Alex Askew took third from a determined challenge from Stacey Luck, Emily Evans took fifth.

The Sally Bartlett set course gave the racers some good challenges in the short space of time. While the slope is not the longest and not having any sprinklers meant that the hot weather slowed it down even more, technique and desire played a major part in how racers got on. Telling was a class ahead in the men's race yet others proved that they could punch above their start numbers: Caroline Powell from Brentwood Park and Emily Murphy in the women's race challenged for places in the top 15 while in the Men's race Shaun Blyth and Laurie Taylor proved that despite their youth they could challenge the older racers.

In the age groups, Telling won the seniors with Riches winning Junior 2, Edward Akister winning Junior 1, Blackwell the Master's age group. Shaun Blyth took took the Children 1 age group ahead of Children 2 winner, Peter Davies from Aldershot in the Overall category.  In the Women's race Flora peel won the Children 1 age group, Emily Evans the Children 2 race, Charlotte Evans the Junior 1 age group and Kathryn Barber the Junior two group, Lucy Newman took the Seniors and Bev Anderson the Masters age groups.
