Both the Super G races at the British Land British Alpine Ski Championships due to be held in Meribel today were cancelled as the warm temperature took its toll on the snow conditions. The high temperature and rain over the last few days took its toll and meant that the organisers had no option but to cancel the race early on Wednesday morning. With the race due to start at 08:00 to try and beat the anticipated hot weather, the organisers took the decision shortly before the Men's Super G would have taken place. Finlay Mickel, having won for the last five years, was naturally disappointed not to be able to make it six calendar years in a row that he had won the Super G Title. It is hoped that the program will be back on track in the morning with the Giant Slalom being held down the piste du Corby in Meribel. Racing did take place in the form of the Parallel Slalom. Both a team race and an individual competition took place. The hot conditions saw the favoured and better known names fail to make the finals in the individual races: Lynn Sharp won the girls race from Melissa Piper. Melissa Piper had been a last minute replacement for Jo Greig who had arrived late last night from competing in the German Championships. The expected challenge from Chemmy Alcott did not materialise as Chemmy was beaten in the opening round by Kim Geluyhems. In the Men's race, Andy Noble beat Tristan Glasse Davies. Tristan had beaten a short clad Finlay in the Semi Finals while Andy had beaten Jas Bruce in the other semi final. Jas had earlier beaten Noel Baxter. For the earlier rounds the red course had been noticeably problematic and many of the more fancied runners had ended their dual slalom campaigns due to the conditions on the course. The Team race saw eight teams of twelve racers (of varying ability) compete and captained by a current member of the British Team (Graham Bell stepped in for Jo Greig at the last moment). Noel's team took the spoils beating Graham's team in the final. |
