Chemmy Alcott, Britain's top racer was left feeling slightly aggrieved as she
failed to make the points in a very tight race. Using the same slope that was
used for the World Championships in 2003, a poor top section cost Alcott dear
as she struggled to make it back into the top 30 of the World standings.
Starting at 45, Alcott was slow out of the blocks and it was only the last
split that spared her blushes. The last split saw her show excellent form
with tenth quickest times and left her feeling the frustration of two
cancelled races in Val d'Isere. With the race being won by German Hilde Gerg,
with compatriot Marie Reisch in third, the American team picked up another
podium as Lindsey Kildow continued her excellent form in taking second. Gerg
may have won the race by 0.37, the largest gap between the racers, but Alcott
was less than two seconds out which normally would have left her in the
points.
A rare off day for top Austrian Renate Goetschl saw her not score as many
points as she would have hoped for in the race for the overall. With both
Paerson and Kostelic scoring top twenty results (13th and 16th respectively),
the lack of Tanja Poutiainen means the Overall swings back in favour of the
Swedish girl, Paerson. Finland's Poutiainen did not start as she had a slight
back strain though she is expected to go in the Giant Slalom in the morning.
Over in Flachau the Men were battling out a thrilling Giant Slalom. With
Canada not having won a men's race for almost twenty years, Thomas Grandi won
in Alta Badia on Sunday and then followed this up with a come from behind
win. Didier Cuche (Switzerland) had looked strong for a win but a stunning
second run by the Italian Canadian meant that Cuche had to settle for second
with that man Miller in third. Benni Raich in fourth and surprise of the day
Daron Rahlves, more commonly known as a speed skier, finishing fifth.
Tomorrow sees Alain and Noel Baxter look to recapture the form and bring some
pre-Christmas cheer to the technical team. After a result-less post Sestriere
period, both will be looking to recreate the training form coming into the
festive period.
