Editors Rant
What a season….WOW! With two of the greatest racers retiring as the season closed, British Ski racing’s athlete stable is in a healthy state. Alain and Finlay got to the top in their disciplines through hard work and the competition with the British racers but more importantly through wanting to be the best in the World. While they may not have got to be best in the World, they gave it their all: Blood, tears no doubt and a whole lake of sweat. The fact that British skiing is recognised at the World Cup is not short partly due to them. To young racers thinking it will all come on a plate, think again: Success comes through hard work and determination.
While the issues of financial misjudgement and maladministration are documented in this issue, the racers do need help. Without the support and financial backing, the road to the top is not easy. Despite times being hard across the board, there are still companies doing well that could benefit from the clean image that ski racing can portray! If you know of them, do not be afraid to ask them if they can help your career: 1.7million people go skiing each year – the decision makers may just be one of them!
Competition is a great way of bringing the best of the competitors to the front. Yet competition also has to be invigorating and attractive to encourage racers to attend. If the event is the same old tired format, then this will deter rather than attract people to the sport. In a time when less racers are taking part in the grass roots of the sport, the sport needs to look at the pathway from the grassroots all the way up, not just what the athletes do but also how the athletes can get to the top. We are not a big nation but if we all work together we can achieve great things: Work together for the good of the sport not our own little fiefdoms!
Have a great summer and train hard
Neil
