Top 10 for Alcott in Val d’Isere!

Chemmy Alcott (27, Twickenham), Britain’s number one skier, continued her run of form today in the opening race in Val d’Isere, France, with a 9th place finish in the Super Combined competition.

Starting from bib number twenty four, Alcott laid down a convincing first fun in the Downhill to finish in a time of 1:48.40, +3.74 seconds behind race winner Lindsay Vonn (USA) who, moments earlier, laid down a blistering run to take the lead by +1.52 seconds over second place Maria Riesch (GER).  She then had a solid run in the slalom, moving up three places to finish the race in 9th position.

Alcott commented “I’m really happy with the downhill positing.  I came 12th in the downhill this morning and I made a couple of mistakes, tactical line errors because the light was down and it’s quite difficult to see.  However, when I came down I was really happy with the position but seeing how far I was behind Lindsay I realised that there are a couple of changes I’ll need to make in tomorrows race”.

“It is one of the best runs I’ve had in Val d’Isere.  With it being so cold here the snow is really aggressive and I’m an aggressive skier so it is really difficult for me to get the feeling of skiing this kind of snow fast as it is so grippy.  I tend to power the ski’s too much so it was a good learning curve for me today”.

“I had a really solid run in the slalom.  I felt like the edges of my ski’s were too sharp to really let it go but in retrospect even if I’d had a great run I probably would have ended up in 9th because the deficits were so huge for everyone”.

“Today’s result has really blasted my confidence, that’s three top 15 finishes in three different events all in the last two weeks”.

The racing continues in Val d’Isere tomorrow with the Downhill followed by the Super G on Sunday.  Chemmy continued “if it keeps snowing like it currently is and the visibility is poor it will suit me better - blue skies mean the snow is grippier.  I know a 20 to 25 place finish will be a really good result tomorrow and I’m really looking forward to it”.

Results:

1st – VONN, Lindsey (USA), 2:37.55

2nd – RIESCH, Maria (GER), 2:38.71

3rd – GOERGLE, Elisabeth (AUT). 2:38.94

Meanwhile, Alcott’s team mate Dougie Crawford (22, Glasgow) finished 47th of 67 starters on his debut on the ‘camel humps’ Downhill course in Val Gardena, Italy.  The result is positive for Crawford who continues to show a lot of talent with each race he does.  Crawford will be in action again tomorrow in the Super G followed by a second Dowhill on Sunday.
