MASTERS RACING U.K. Many parents, after they have trundled there children round the dry slopes of Britain and the snow further a field find that when their off-spring grows up and does their own thing (it happens to us all) they loose touch with many friends and acquaintances they have made. The answer is Masters Racing it keeps you fit, which believe me it is so easy to put on the pounds as you get older, keeps you in touch your friends and acquaintances from the racing fraternity and most of all is great fun. Without going in to the nuts and bolts of it you can ask your local club coach or contact any of the master racers on the circuit or indeed myself, for details of how to get in to it. You certainly don’t need the Tomba skill levels or the Radcliffe stamina levels just a commitment to enjoy yourself. We all tend to look after each other in Masters racing and encourage new entrants, but still keep a healthy level of competitiveness. The age groups within Snowsport leave a lot to be desired (due to entrant levels) but on the international stage they go up in five year bands from the ripe young age of thirty. This year the Welsh Championships in Oppdal (Norway) is going to have a specific Masters category with the full range of age bands to encourage a wider entry, the trip will also include race training and protocol so you do not have to have a wide knowledge base to attend. The authorities in Oppdal are also going to open this event up to Norwegian Masters to give it a truly international flavour. Further details of the event can be found on the Snowsport Wales website. You are welcome to contact me at any time or come along to Western Counties training evenings at Gloucester Ski centre on a Monday night between 7 and 8.30 and join the other silver topped racers. Just as a note of encouragement our oldest athlete in training is well in to his seventies – if he can do it – you can do it !!!
