MARS® DRINK KEEPS PARALYMPIC HOPEFULS FIRED UP FOR THE SLOPES MARS® Drink is delighted to announce its 2007 sponsorship of two of Great Britain’s finest 2010 Paralympics hopefuls. Kevin Alderton and Tim Farr are members of the British Adaptive Ski team, and with the new sponsorship association with MARS® Drink, will be hitting the slopes this season proudly sporting the eye catching red, black and gold bottle logo. Kevin and Tim both have their own inspirational stories to tell. Tim, 23, from Richmond in Surrey, broke his back during a ski jumping accident in 2004. After four and half months in hospital, while still managing to complete his degree at Exeter University with a 2:1 Hons, Tim was determined to hit the slopes again. With the help of The Back-Up Trust, he was back skiing with his brand new adaptive skis just eleven months after the accident. Tim is now harbouring ambitions of competing at the 2010 Paralympics. Tim is thrilled with the support of MARS® Drink: “To have the support of such a widely recognised brand is a dream come true. With their help I can now continue to compete and hopefully win some medals in the process.” GB team mate Kevin Alderton, 35, from Dartford in Kent, lost his sight as a result of a tragic incident in 1998. After he was discharged from the Army, Kevin’s sudden loss of career, independence and self esteem led him into a deep depression. Fortunately, Kevin discovered St. Dunstans, a charity which helps blind ex-serviceman with their rehabilitation. With their support he was encouraged to return to the sport he loved, and after much time and perseverance, began to out-ski his guides on even the most challenging of runs. Qualifying for the British Adaptive Team in 2005, Kevin has gone on to achieve outstanding results in alpine races, and has even become a world record holder for Blind Speed Skiing. Kevin was officiated by the FSV (Federation Ski De Vittesse) and Guinness World Records on 14th April 2006, when he achieved an incredible 100.94mph. Kevin is really excited about his new sponsorship deal: “To be associated with a household name is a fantastic opportunity for me. With my great record breaking result last year, I’m hoping to better that and my achievements in the other alpine events even further in 2007, none of which would be possible without the help of my sponsors. Michelle Frost at Masterfoods is delighted with the brand’s new association: “Tim and Kevin are two truly inspirational individuals, who have overcome tremendous odds and achieved an awe inspiring record of results for the British Adaptive Ski Team. Recent sports studies have shown that chocolate milk can help to aid recovery after strenuous exercise,* therefore it seemed a perfect fit for MARS® Drink to support both these guys with their 2007 training and competitions. I’m positive they will achieve some fantastic results for the UK.”
