Guildford – Morocco 2008

At the start of the ski season Tristram More-Molyneux and Scott MacBain were sitting in a hotel room in Ramsau a little bored it has to be said.  T was looking at his map of Europe which was spread out across the area of most of the floor.  He said to Scott MacBain “I really want to do something really crazy before I get too much older”.  That was the spark that got MacBain thinking.  As he looked at the map MacBain thought what better thing to do than to navigate to Africa on bikes!  Furthermore why not do it for charity at the same time.  Since then the two intrepid racers have planned the trip and here’s what they have come up with:

The tour begins in Guildford, Surrey on May 16 where they will be setting off on the first leg which is a fifty mile long cycle to Portsmouth where they shall take the overnight ferry down to St Malo in Northern France.  Upon arriving in France they head South for 137km to the town of Cranon where they will spend our first night in on French soil in one of many charming campsites they shall be visiting over the two theyek trip.  Next up is the 98km leg to Vihiers, a little shorter than the day before for tiredness.  Day four takes them to the slightly larger town of Niort which will bring them past the halfway mark on the way to Bordeaux.  Day five will be a slightly more taxing 115km cycle to Mirambeau, the last town before they reach their first milestone.  They will breath a sigh of relief upon reaching Bordeaux on day six as this leg of the tour is a significant 120km.  The next day sees things getting more exciting as they will be making base camp below the Pyrenees in the town of Larceveau situated 100km south of Bordeaux where they will rest before the biggest climb of the trip.  On day eight they will climb over the mountains into Spain on the 90km road to the famous Spanish town of Pamplona but bull running may be out of the question with the tired legs.  Day nine leads them onto the next Spanish town Agreda which sits 124km south of Pamplona.  Next up will be Atienza which is another 125km day in the saddle.  Each day becomes more difficult as they make a big effort to reach Madrid on the eleventh day where they have agreed to spend an extra day to make a recovery.  After this rest day they will begin the toughest day of the tour tackling a massive 162km leg to the town of Fuente el Fresno.  The longest leg will be followed by the second longest when they take on the 141km that separates Fuente el Fresno from our next stop in Cardena.  The two week mark sees them on a 125km route to Estepa, where they may start to smell the sea air.  From Estepa they head to Ronda on a much less difficult 96km.  The final leg of the tour is a 105km cycle which I’m sure will end in a plunge directly into the sea in the port of Gibraltar!  They will catch the ferry across to Morocco and of course they will take the bikes as they may cycle the 60km across the northern point of Morocco from Ceuta to Tangier.  When everything is over they will drive back to the UK very satisfied with our efforts.

Every kilometre they cover will be in aid of our charities that they have chosen.  Scott’s charity is the Help for Heroes charity which provides support for servicemen and women that have been injured in Iraq and Afghanistan.  T’s charity is Wills’ Africa trust which provides much needed money for worthy projects in Kenya.  You can donate to Help for Heroes via the internet link: www.justgiving.com/scottmacbain and the website for T’s charity is http://www.willsafricatrust.com.

They look forward to your donations!

Thanks a lot – Scott MacBain and Tristram More-Molyneux
