The Sunday morning after the All England has for the last few years been when the Mini's race has taken place. This is when the future generation of racers get their moment in the limelight. These guys and girls are the future stars and with the likes of Ed Drake and Chemmy Alcott on the trophies, progression to the top can be seen. Despite the lack of the large crowd that was seen on the Saturday, as the racers arrived for the Inter Club, talent was on show! The sun shone and the heat was on! The pressure these young racers and future stars were under was immense and not what the racing should be about at this age. Multiple amounts of skis, coaches and high class kit...where had the fun gone? Is it not time to make the Mini's races (both on snow and plastic) a fun race, maybe a skier cross or something that brings the smiles to all? Competition is what it is all about but surely the pressure these kids will experience from the moment they reach the dizzy heights of Children's racing, is enough? As for the racing, Steph Davies won the girls race with fastest time on both runs ahead of home town favourite Nia Jenkins and Flora Peel. In the larger boys field, James Gibb started at the front and put the pressure on the rest of the field with a smooth and clean run. Max Baggio was next down and although he was smooth, he slotted in behind Gibb. The standard of the whole of this group was immense and none would have been out of place in the main race the day before. Daniel Poth, Ashley Breese and Mickey Knowles all demonstrated that in years to come they too will be up at the top of the main field. Sadly the expected challenge from Max Moss failed to materialise as he came out near the bottom of the first run. He will be back yet nothing hurts like wanting something badly and not reaching your goal. Gibb held his nerve to win the race with a smooth second run despite giving his father a nervous moment at the second gate! Baggio showed his sister how to do it and he took second ahead of Daniel Poth with Ashley Breese and Mickey Knowles taking the fourth and fifth. In the Inter Club team event, Wycombe came through to win a closely fought event that had several clubs missing top racers due to snow commitments. Wycombe beat Ravens in the semi finals as Hemel came through against defending champions Pendle in the other semi. Two close finals saw Wycombe edge out near neighbours for victory with Ravens taking third. |
