Alcott improves Best ever British result at World Championships

Chemmy Alcott got back on her skis on Friday after spending the previous ten days resting and recovering from burst bunions on her feet.  Had it not been for the World Championships, the 22 year old from Hove would have still been resting.  Defying the pain caused by the injury, Alcott attacked the course and was rewarded with improving her career best result at the World Championships, in these her fourth Championships, Alcott finished in 22nd place.

The conditions were aggressive and perfect for racers able to use their skis softly rather than the harsh conditions that have been common across Europe this winter.  This allowed Alcott the luxury of not having to use her injured feet vigorously as if the snow had been harder.  “My timing was still off but bits of the course went well for me,” reflected the leading British female racer.

“It is tough to live up to other people’s expectations but I still want to give my best,” Alcott commented.  Performance Director for Snowsport GB, Mark Tilston, added: “We could have hoped for more but not expected more.”  Alcott has spent the last eight months struggling with foot injuries and whilst the last ten days have allowed the injury to heal pretty well it is still not entirely better.

“The time Chemmy has lost not only during the last ten days but over the last eight months, means this result is as good as could have been hoped for.” Tilston stated.  Alcott adds: “I was lucky with the number of top racers that came out,” to which she continued “To win you have to get down!”

With many of the fancied favourites falling early on up the course, Alcott’s run was solid and consistent.  The fact that top seed and pre race favourite, Renate Goetschl, finished behind Alcott was not lost on Alcott.

The race was won by Sweden’s Anja Pearson with Lucia Recchia of Italy and Julia Mancuso of America taking the remaining podium spots.  The next race is on Thursday with the Men’s Combined.
