Men and women: three
crystal globes, 15 World Cup victories, 42 podium finishes overall
Fischer is the most successful ski brand in the men's 2007/08 Alpine
World Cup. Fischer scored 3,915 points in the men's FIS brand ranking,
giving the brand an 85 point lead over second-placed Atomic. If you add
together all the World Cup points, the gap of 7,141 to 6,609 points is
even bigger. "Back in 2004 we set ourselves the target of being the best
ski brand in the men's events in 2008. It wasn't easy, but that's what
makes me even happier that we have really succeeded in this short time.
It was an extraordinarily successful season for us," says Siegi
Voglreiter, Racing Director at Fischer. "The fact that we had virtually
all our athletes competing with our ski, Soma-Tec boot and binding
package certainly played a major part. This meant that we were able to
tune the equipment setup to perfection. The development of the hole ski
was just as significant. It was plain to see that this ski gave us a
tremendous boost in Slalom. For this reason we will continue to advance
the development of the hole ski." However, there was also a dark side to
the 2007/08 season for Fischer. "The sheer delight gained from the
outstanding performances of our athletes was of course marred by
Matthias Lanzinger's terrible injury, which left us all deeply upset and
shaken. I would also like to take this opportunity to wish Matthias all
the best for his future. As a member of this team and with his
incredible commitment as a racer, he too played a part in us today being
the most successful ski brand in men's racing."
Denise Karbon wins discipline globe in Giant Slalom
The best and most outstanding achievement in a discipline came from
Denise Karbon in the Giant Slalom. Clinching five victories and an
additional podium placing, the Italian emerged as the clear and
undisputed queen of Giant Slalom. "I'd never skied consistently enough
throughout an entire season before, I'd just had good individual
results. Being up there with the leaders for the whole season is what
really makes you one of the good racers. This is what makes me feel
incredibly proud now - I didn't know I had it in me," said the
27-year-old, clearly elated.
Super-G thriller in Bormio: Reichelt clinches victory to win
discipline globe
Hannes Reichelt went into the last Super-G race of the season
trailing Didier Cuche (SUI) by 99 points. The Austrian then went on to
clinch the victory he needed by one hundredth of a second while the
Swiss racer finished 16th, missing out on points by just one place. This
secured the globe for Reichelt. "I actually didn't think it was going to
happen. To begin with I was lucky to be in the lead by one hundredth of
a second. And then I had to keep my fingers crossed for the rest," said
Reichelt, analysing his success.
Mölgg: "With this discipline globe I have achieved my big
goal for the season"
"Before the season began I set myself the target of winning the
overall title in the Slalom. I have now achieved this big goal for the
season," said Mölgg, delighted about his success. "I was in very good
form right throughout this season. The win in Kranjska Gora also gave me
a tremendous boost."
15 wins this season for Denise Karbon, Mario Matt & Co.
Besides Denise Karbon's five World Cup victories the men also
celebrated ten wins in the 2007/08 season. Mario Matt (AUT) clinched
first place in the Slalom classics in Adelboden, Schladming and Zagreb.
With victories in the Super-Gs in Beaver Creek and Bormio, plus the
Giant Slalom in Whistler, Hannes Reichelt (AUT) also had three victories
to his name. Kalle Palander (FIN), who had a premature end to the season
due to a fatigue fracture of the lower leg, was likewise unbeatable in
the Giant Slalom in Alta Badia. And it was Christoph Gruber (AUT) who
led a historic triple success for Fischer (Reichelt 2nd, Gorza 3rd) in
Whistler. Manfred Mölgg (ITA, Slalom Kranjska Gora) and Georg
Streitberger (AUT, Super-G Kvitfjell) celebrated their first race wins.
42 podium finishes overall for the Fischer team
In the 2007/08 season Fischer posted 15 victories, 11 second places
and 16 third places, making 42 podium placings overall. With six podium
finishes, Ivica Kostelić made a significant contribution to this
successful result. The Croatian achieved all his top-three results in
the second half of the season starting with the Combined in Kitzbühel
(20 January). Manfred Mölgg accounted for a further six podium finishes.
