The Celtic Cup GS is always an eye opener in that it is one of the few Giant Slalom's that takes place in the UK over the summer.  The form book goes out of the window and despite the start list being dictated by slalom points, there is no real guide as to who will win.  The Men's race was as close and exciting for many a year.

The top five men, all Seniors, were separated by less that two tenths of a second! Paul Telling came down and thought that he had done enough to maybe snatch the lead but this was soon overhauled by Pete Thelwell.  Thelwell admitted that he thought he had done enough for victory as Georgie Hunt, who came down one after him, could not match his time.  David Hatcher, however, edged just in front of the recently graduated Thelwell to take the spoils by the 0.01 second.  Michael Hatcher took third, a mere 0.04 behind his twin brother.

The girls race was won convincingly by Jayme Baggio.  This season Baggio has made the Celtic Cup her own with some tremendous performances that has seen her unbeaten to date.  Despite being in the Children 2 category she has set her sights high and nothing short of overall victory has been good enough for her.  Age group wins mean nothing to this determined racer, it is the Overall victory's that she craves!   Baggio's time would have been good enough for 10th= in the men's race, ahead of all the boys in her age group!  Alice Thelwell matched her brother's place, second, just ahead of club mate and great friend Rachel Adcock.  Lauren Cadman and Abby Clifford rounded out the top 5 in the girls race.

The nature of the slope meant that stronger racers were able to gain time through the flat top section and then build on this through the faster, steeper lower section of the Pontypool slope.  Those technically more adventurous reaped the benefits.  In the girls Children 1, Alessia Thomas Jackson comfortably won the age group as she placed in the top ten overall.  Thomas Jackson now needs to make the transition from secure top ten finisher to challenging further up the results.  Shannon Taylor edged out Jeni Thomas to take second place ahead of the older Thomas, who is starting to show good promise for the future.  In the boys race, Jake Williams comfortably won the age group ahead of Ashley Richards and Simon Lyons.

In the Children two age group, Baggio was comfortably ahead of Kirsty Hatcher in second and Hannah Knowles in third.  The boys race saw a overdue victory for Taylor Waters ahead of Michael Thelwell and Andrew Watson.

Junior 1 saw Lauren Cadman ahead of Abby Clifford and then Niamh Lyons from Ireland.  Lyons's performance was strong enough for her to also win the most improved shirt for the next round.  Both Cadman and Clifford, in their first years in the Junior age group are developing into strong talented racers. James Knock took his first Celtic Cup victory in the boys race ahead of club mate Benn Hall with Matthew Mullally third, upholding Welsh honours!

The older of the Junior categories saw a win for Thelwell ahead of Adcock with Rowan Vernon just piping Aimee Broughton for third.  With the Seniors taking the first five places overall, places 6 to 8 were taken by the Junior 2 men.  Brian Byrne from Ireland took overall spoils ahead of Hugh Wilson and Dan Wyatt.

Leah Cassidy took the senior age group ahead of Lucy Newman and Janet Earnshaw Hamilton won the masters group.  With the David Hatcher, Pete Thelwell and Michael Hatcher taking the overall spoils, the senior age group spoils also went their way.  In the Masters age group, Rob Hales took victory ahead of Paul Bunton and Denis Cadman.

The mini's race was, as always, very hotly contested with Stephanie Davies winning from Alex Bullock and Sam Maurice in the girls.  Max Baggio recovered from a disappointing Slalom to win the Giant Slalom ahead of Ashley Breese and Max Moss.
