Austrians announce Giant Slalom Men's Team (posted 7 Feb)

Hermann Maier, Benni Raich, Christoph Gruber and Rainer Schoenfelder have been selected by the Austrian Ski Federation for Wednesday's race.

 

Schroecksnadel adds to war of words with FIS over doping (posted 7 Feb)

Peter Schroecksnadel added oil to the fire when he announced that doping should be allowed in skiing.  In a live TV debate for Austrian Television, the President of the Austrian Ski Federation debated the issue with the head of FIS, Gian Franco Kasper.  Schroecksnadel, according to www.sport1.at, reiterated his stance saying that FIS should be looking at the hard line drugs offenders rather than "unlucky" athletes.  He followed this up by saying that sports men and women have often been treated as second class citizens!

 

Dorfmeister takes fourth spot in Austrian Women's Giant slalom team (posted 7 Feb)

Michaela Dorfmeister has been selected for the Women's Giant Slalom Team, joining Marlies Schild (winner in Semmering), Nikki Hosp and Elizabeth Goergl.

 

Kjetil Andre Aamodt does NOT make Norwegian team for Giant Slalom (posted 7 Feb)

The legendary Norwegian, Kjetil Andre Aamodt, has not made the team for the Norwegians for Wednesday's men's Giant Slalom. After training on Monday, the 34 year old announced that he wanted to leave Bormio and go to his home in Monaco.  Coaches have not yet announced the Norwegian team for the Slalom so Aamodt has been told to stay in resort for the time being!  The Norwegian team for the Giant Slalom is Lasse Kjus, Bjarne Solbakken, Andre Nilsson and Aksel Lund Svindal.

 

Confusion and anger at ticket price scandal

A war of words and misinformation erupted at the World Championships in Bormio over the amount of seats that were left unused and unsold! Both FIS and the organisers blamed each other at first before the organisers were forced into a face saving climb down through being honest!  Reuters and AFP reported the following pieces on Tuesday

 

Swatch serve as Official Timekeepers

The farce that has erupted after the Schladming fiasco has given Swatch the opportunity to showcase their wares on the world stage again.  Swatch will provide intermediate times and speed measurements for all the races.  Not only are they doing the timing systems, Swatch have also developed a system that helps normal skiers to move about the mountains easily without the need for paper lift passes.  They have also developed a special snowpass system especially for the World Championships.
