Didier Cuche calls time on his career at the end of the season
To a crowded room, Didier Cuche announced that
the time has come to call time on his illustrious alpine ski racing
career.
“I'm convinced that I have chosen the right moment to retire from
active professional sport,” he said. “I'm fit and well, I'm still up
there with the leaders and I can still win races. I would like to
leave the World Cup stage on a high and conclude my career in the
spring.”
Cuche is one of the iconic Swiss racers and yet he chose the race in
Kitzbuehel to announce the decision instead of announcing it in his
home country. “I celebrated my first victory here in Kitzbuehel and
that marked the beginning of my career. There are few races that
trigger so many positive emotions for me. And along with Adelboden
in 2002, it was always the races in Kitzbuehel. Kitzbuehel remains
the downhill mecca in ski racing and, yes, perhaps this explains why
I decided this week to announce my retirement in a place that is so
important and meaningful to me.”
In 2011 Cuche won the Downhill in Kitzbuehel that had such legendary racers like Klammer and Eberharter in awe of his talent. Cuche is hoping to leave the Austrian venue this year having made his mark in one way or another. The future is bright and he already has many options and plans to work with his numerous sponsors including Head, Audi and Corum.
