Kirchgasser benefits from Schild’s DNF

Every winning run comes to an end and thus the incredible run of Marlies Schild came to an end in the first run in Kranjska Gora.  Michaela Kirchgasser, a winner in GS five years ago, was the racer to step up to the mark as people came to terms with the end of the winning run of Marlies Schild. Kirchgasser won the first run and then extended her lead in the second for her first Slalom World Cup win.  Second place went to Tanja Poutiainen and third to Veronica Zuzulova.

Schild was not the only big name to crash out: Maria Hoefl Riesch endured the same end result and drifted further behind in the season long competition that she won last season, With Lindsey Vonn taking seventh place, she lost a few points to Tina Maze, 4th, but was not too concerned about this at the end of the race.  Vonn is concentrating on winning the speed races, Downhill and Super G as well as the Super Combined’s and then hopes to take some top three places in the GS and then not let Tina Maze get too far ahead of her in the slalom.

The girl’s head off to St Moritz next on the World Cup and then on to Garmisch for more speed races.
