Watch out for the Future star of the American Team

The day before the World Cup Aspen style kicked off, 16-year-old American Mikaela Shiffrin chatted with journalists at a small round table in the back of the Aspen press room. They were laughing. She spoke of her first trip to Europe and how embarrassed/nervous she was to share a long car ride with her J3 coach Kirk Dwyer.

"Fortunately we rented a really small car and the skis were between us all the way up to the windshield," she said. "And he did have good taste in music." Around the table were NBC Olympics commentators Steve Porino, Todd Brooker, Tim Ryan and Christin Cooper. The nervousness might still be there, but they couldn't tell.

Also in the room were her teammates, two of them Olympic gold medalists, one of which is rolling off a historic season opening victory in Soelden. While Aspen celebrated Julia Mancuso’s 3rd place in the Slalom with fireworks maybe they should be looking at Shiffrin as the new Vonn. Vonn elected to rest her back from the Slalom and headed to Lake Louise and the speed. Shiffrin took 8th place in only her second World Cup race and she is only 16!

Watch out for this past winner of the Topolino!
