Lindsey Vonn: Taking each day as it comes

Following her training crash on Wednesday 2 February, Lindsey Vonn is playing it safe in terms of the concussion that she suffered in the fall.  Head injuries are never easy to play with and with the World Championships just days away, Vonn is taking the safe route. “It is never easy with the head,” explained Vonn after the first run in Arber, “I knew straight away after just five gates warming up for the Slalom that it was not good,” she continued. “The main trouble is keeping my focus.”

This morning Vonn spent the three hours before the race actually started sitting in her car watching the Men’s race from Hinterstoder. “I was kind of hoping that the race would be cancelled so that it would give my head more time to recover,” Vonn told reporters in the finish area.  Having done her warm up routine, Vonn decided that she could race according to husband and mentor, Thomas Vonn.

The first run went OK, explained Lindsey but she knew that she had made a number of mistakes down the shortened course. With the first racer of the first run kicking out of the gate at 12.00, every moment that Vonn can get to rest and let her head recover is vital.

So how does this affect her World Championship preparations? “I will try and train a full length Super G run tomorrow in Garmisch but I will wait until the very last moment before I decide,” declared Vonn.

After the first run, Vonn sits one place behind her friend and Overall Title rival, Maria Riesch in fifteenth spot.  As the saying goes: “Winners never quit and quitters never win!” Vonn will not give up without a fight!

The second run kicks off at 2.45 CET (1.45 in UK)
