Summerhayes’ Saas Fee
Success
British
athlete Katie Summerhayes got her season off to a flying start with
a 3rd place podium finish in yesterday’s Saas Fee Europa
Cup. 17 year old Katie,
who is a member of the Berkeley British Freestyle Freeski team,
finished top for GBR in a competition including World Cup and X
Games skiers and won by former World champion Viginie Faivre.
After the first heat there were 4 British athletes in the top
6 and in the end, Katie’s excellent podium was closely followed by a
4th place for Beanie Mile Home, with Becky Hammond and
Rowan Cheshire finishing 7th and 8th
respectively. Anna
Vincenti also competed and despite falling in both runs, her
aggressive style bodes well for her future development.
Tyler
Harding put in a strong performance in the men’s event finishing 7th
overall, a fantastic result for the 15 year old GBR athlete, the
youngest in the top 16 final.
The other British men: James Webb; Peter Speight and Rob
Taylor narrowly missed out on the final, finishing 17th,
18th and 19th, separated by only a single
point.
Overall
the size and quality of the GBR team took many of the other nations
by surprise and all of the British athletes will now return to an
arduous training schedule under head coach and team Manager Pat
Sharples.
The
British Freestyle Freeski team recently announced that they had
agreed a vital support arrangement with Berkeley Homes.
This sponsorship arrangement enables a full time coach and
implementation of a programme of activities that elite athletes
representing Britain deserve.
In addition both Katie Summerhayes and Rowan Cheshire are
supported by TASS.
