Welsh Ski Racing Heats Up
With the finals of the Welsh artificial slope ski race circuit just
two weeks away, the heat is on in the most wide open run in since
the series started nearly 20 years ago.
Last weekend was some fantastic racing at Pontypool Ski Slope
in the race series sponsored by the ski resort of Champery,
Switzerland.
After five events the women’s overall competition has 4 ladies tied
for first place and just four series points splitting the first
eight ladies. In the
men’s overall competition Gerard Flahive from
Hemel Hempstead has a commanding lead, however one slip up and he
can easily be overtaken by at least four other men.
In the weekend of events at Pontypool over a hundred racers from
across the UK competed for the second weekend of the seven event
race series.
The racing brought some great excitement and a variety of winners.
Three races over the two days saw three different winners.
Alice Hales from Cardiff took the first slalom, Elen Hathaway
from Aldershot took the Giant Slalom and Alex Bullock (Pictured)
from Telford won her first national event in the second slalom on
the Sunday.
The men’s racing was just as exciting. Welsh racer Gerard Flahive
(Hemel & Impulse) came out on top in the first race of the weekend.
Andrew Watson from Cardiff & UK number 1 ranked skier on the
artificial slopes took both the Giant Slalom and the second Slalom
races.
The summer season of Welsh artificial slope races moves on to
Gloucester in the second weekend in July with continuation of the
Celtic Cup races sponsored by Champery, Switzerland.
