Viletta shocks the field with win in Super G
Sandra Viletta overcame his fear of flying and used the inspiration
of Bode Miller’s win in the Downhill to join the list of World Cup
winners. This was
Viletta’s first win and also his first podium yet take nothing away
from the 25 year old Swiss racer, this was a tremendous achievement.
With Svindal in the finish and looking ominously at making it
two wins in the Super G World Cup, Viletta was fast from the top and
had the green light when he crossed the line two tenths ahead of the
Norwegian. Beat Feuz
further underlined the Swiss form with third place. Robbie Dixon
took a career best in fourth ahead of the Austrian Hannes Reichelt.
Aksel Lund Svindal continued the epic assault of the HEAD World Cup
rebels on the World Cup this season by taking second in the Super G
in Beaver Creek. With HEAD racers having won every race so far this
season on the Men’s World Cup, Svindal looked to have continued the
success as he lead after the elite top 30 racers had almost
finished. While Svindal
admitted he did not feel entirely satisfied with his run, he was
satisfied with the result he said later.
As he watched Viletta come down with Beat Feuz, who finished behind
Svindal, Svindal turned to the Swiss racer and said “we are in
trouble now,” after Viletta went through the first split a second
ahead. Svindal had won the season opening Super G in Lake Louise the
previous weekend and looked to be on course for taking the second
but in the end Viletta edged him by two tenths of a second.
On a day that saw more snow fall during the race, Svindal admitted
that he
"just wasn't clean enough, I had
some mistakes, not big mistakes," Svindal said. "Viletta, he was
carrying the speed all the way up there. I had to throw them
sideways a couple times and he skied really well up there."
After his exploits
in the Downhill that had seen him take the win, the Bode factor
helped Viletta as he put everything into his run. For Miller though,
he pushed the boundary just a little too far in true Bode style and
even he did not know how he had recovered from having one ski high
in the air and carving a turn on his inside ski.
