SKI Debuts Training Tips with Ted
Likely your first ski dream is in the books, but SKI Magazine and the U.S. Ski Team don't want you crying for mommy after opening day. Avoid the vitamin "I" this winter by tuning into weekly training tips featuring Olympic gold medalist and two-time Audi FIS Alpine World Cup giant slalom champion Ted Ligety (Park City, UT) beginning Monday, Oct. 4 at www.skimag.com.
Filmed at the Center of Excellence in Park City, the state-of-the-art training facility and home to the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA), Ligety and USSA High Performance Strength and Conditioning Coordinator Alex Moore deliver a series of regular exercises designed to tune your muscles before you tune your skis.
"It's important for SKI to best prepare our readers to have an incredible season on the snow," said Heather Hansman, Ski Magazine online editor. "Working with one of the greatest skiers in the world at what we consider is the gold standard of training facilities was an easy move to make."
The series debuts on Oct. 4 and features a new segment each Monday for six weeks.
"We're all psyched when ski season finally rolls around, but no one wants to be in pain following the first few runs," said Ligety. "It doesn't take all that much work to get your body in shape for opening day. It's definitely worth putting in the time so you don't wake up the next morning feeling like you've been hit by a bus."
Debuting with a session on squat jumps this Monday, the weekly series will pour through exercises that anyone can do, yet will likely make you sweat just watching as Moore and Ligety move through step-by-step instructions for each session.
"It was great having the opportunity to showcase exercises that an Olympic gold medalist does every day, but these same exercises are not out of reach for the public," said Moore. "Not only can they help improve their performance, it can also help prevent injuries."
Some exercised do require gym equipment, but all can be done on your own. The debut edition works you quads, glutes and hamstrings to increase vertical jump and power on the hill.
"Forget those weird morning workout programs and click on SKI. You'll thank yourself come opening day," said Ligety, the mastermind behind Shred Optics, who is known to huck a cliff or two in his speed suit.
Ligety's weekly training sessions open this Monday, Oct. 4 at www.skimag.com and continue with a fresh episode every Monday to complete the six-week series just in time for a proper snowpack for shredding.
The U.S. Ski Team, including Ligety recently returned from a two and a half week training camp in New Zealand. After a brief stop in Boston next week for the New England Ski and Snowboard Ball, a fundraising event for the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association, Ligety will jump back on a plane for Europe and final preparations before the World Cup opening weekend Oct. 22-23 in Soelden, Austria.
North American fans can catch Ligety and the Team race live during the Audi Birds of Prey Race Week set for Dec. 3-5 in Beaver Creek, CO – home of the 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships and what many consider one of the most exciting downhill tracks on the World Cup tour.
